The aptly titled, "Talking Makes the Workplace Happier" programme was developed in line with the UAE's Happiness and Wellness initiative, with the objective of improving employees’ mental wellbeing.

ACPN wanted to provide real-life tools for corporate clients to increase interpersonal intelligence, enabling them to maintain a healthy work-life balance, and to cope with stress.

In this feature, we take a closer look at the American Centre for Psychiatry and Neurology (ACPN) and their winning entry for the Corporate Wellness Partner of the Year at the 2018 awards.

Tackling mental health

Modern life can be extremely stressful, which can seriously affect our state of mind. An estimated one in four people globally are suffering from some kind of mental health condition, and the stigma attached to diagnosing and treating these problems can make it hard for sufferers to find support. It is a particular issue in this region, where cultural traditions may deter people from seeking help from medical professionals.

The American Centre for Psychiatry and Neurology (ACPN), established in Abu Dhabi in 2008, set out with the aim of removing the taboo surrounding mental health issues.

By adopting a culturally sensitive approach, they have established themselves as the leading specialist medical centre for mental health and neuroscience in the region, with over 60,000 patients across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Al Ain.

In 2014, as an exclusive affiliate for Optum UK Worldwide, ACPN established the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) across the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

The programme provides staff with 24 hour access to EAP services, and ensures that the person answering the telephone is local to the region, so that they are able to communicate in the clients own language and offer advice that is culturally and geographically relevant.

Alongside individual counselling, wellness seminars and workshops, solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), an interactive corporate training method used by ACPN, has been introduced to provide employees with tools to create positive changes in their life.

This culture-sensitive approach won ACPN the Daman Corporate Wellness Partner of the Year award, 2018. The judges stated that they were “very impressed with their retention rates, and loved the fact they took the time to reflect on the impact on their clients.”
