After experiencing his own health crisis, our CEO noticed that disease was increasing in our workforce.  He felt that we needed more focus on health and spent a year searching for a suitable health program.  Unfortunately there were not any on the market, so he decided to develop our Health Monitoring Management System (HMMS) within the company in 2005. Our HMMS has evolved over the years with continual improvements and has become a pioneering example to monitor and motivate employees to take ownership for their health and well-being.

Our company’s aim is to help employees avoid these diseases before they happen by encouraging them to practice prevention and improve their health.  We have implemented an innovative approach to health through our flagship holistic health and wellness program, the Health Monitoring Management System (HMMS).

The HMMS is designed to assess the fitness of every employee and promote wellness and disease prevention from a holistic point of view.  Private consultations with a holistic doctor are provided to all employees to evaluate their health, diet, and lifestyle.  Significant emphasis is then placed on educating employees throughout their service on practicing disease prevention and leading healthy lifestyles.  Education is achieved through mandatory health workshops, quarterly wellness campaigns, daily SMS, health improvement programs, and frequent health-related activities. Periodic medical evaluations are also performed on employees to follow their progress throughout their employment.

The process was initiated by hiring a Naturopathic Doctor who was a specialist in the prevention of disease and an expert in healing the body and mind through natural means.  Then the team identified a list of medical tests that should be conducted on each employee to identify their health status.  Categories were also developed based on lab results to provide a benchmark for each employee to strive for through health improvements. The categories formed a basis for the frequency of medical check-ups, tailored programs, and health and wellness activities. In-depth health courses were also developed to teach the employees why and how to prevent disease and reach optimal health through their daily habits.   The process has evolved over the years by refining the lab tests, health courses, health activities, and wellness events.

Obstacles:

Persuading people to let go of their lifetime of bad habits in favor of healthier options presents a difficult challenge.  Some of the obstacles that we face are the language barriers, different cultural influences, entrenched mindset and beliefs, access to healthy food, and accessibility to all employees in the company.  We are constantly developing new ways to approach these hurdles.

Healthy diet and lifestyle have become an everyday part of the culture at AlMansoori, employees are incorporating healthier habits into their diet and lifestyle, and some employees are reversing or stopping the progression of their disease.

Employees have become accustomed to AlMansoori’s policies including our no sugar policy, no smoking policy, and policy of only serving healthy food at canteens and events.  We also provide a fruit and salad vending machine, health walks, sporting events, health days, wellness clubs, detox programs, weight loss programs, Tai Chi practices, HIIT trainings, blood donation drives, health campaigns, health tip emails, shop with the doc sessions, health fairs and private consultations.

Through our HMMS program, we are able to take a sample of 524 current employees that have been in employment with the company since before January 1st 2010. The data shows that 42 of these employees have improved in category and made positive changes to their health. This means they have either moved from category 3 to category 2 or category 2 to category 1 (categories defined in the “classification” section). The data also shows that 47 of these employees have quit smoking. Also, 47% have reduced their weight, 52% have improved their blood sugar levels, and 50% have decreased their cholesterol levels.  Since implementation of the HMMS 15 years ago, the statistics demonstrate that our workforce is becoming healthier.
